Vocal Skills

We focus not only on students learning how to sing on their own and with others in a group, but also, on improving their ability to listen.
Music Literacy

Our process specializes in providing both our youngest students, as well as those students having some experience, a solid foundation in reading music.

Reading Comprehension

We encourage our students to go beyond the music and discover the meaning behind the words they sing and how it enhances the song.

Maritza Borja is the Director of Vocal Music at James Curran Middle School. She has been teaching choir for the Bakersfield City School District since 2015. She earned a BA degree in Music Education from California State University, Bakersfield. Since then, she has furthered her education by taking summer courses in the Kodály Methodology. She looks forward to implementing an engaging approach to music literacy in Level 2.

Ingrid Borja is a Junior High and Middle school Choir teacher for Bakersfield City School District. She teaches students of all ages through her private studio and is an assistant music director for St. Philip the Apostle Church. She holds a Bachelors degree in Music Education and a single subject credential in Music from California State University, Bakersfield. Ms. Borja has also recently become a fully certified Kodaly instructor which she earned through the CSUB Kodaly Institute and is passionate in sharing the joy and fun in music.

Angel M. Vázquez-Ramos, a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico is Associate Professor and Director of Choral Studies at California State University, Bakersfield. He teaches undergraduate courses in music education, choral conducting, and conducts the University Singers and Chamber Singers. Before his appointment to CSUB, he served as Director of Choral Music Education at Chapman University from 2010 to 2015.
